The Ultimate Haircare Guide for Every Hair Type – My Own Experience

Introduction

Hair care has always been an important and challenging task, especially when it comes to soft and smooth hair. Choosing the right shampoo and conditioner , regular oiling, and following the right routine all help in making your hair healthy and beautiful. In this guide, I am going to tell you how you can keep your hair soft and smooth, which products to choose, and what kind of routine can promote the beauty and health of hair.

Hair care is not just about using good products, but the right routine, the right habits and a little bit of loving care can really transform your hair. I have personally gone through different hair problems – dryness, hair fall, frizz – and here I am sharing what I have learnt over the years.

1. If your hair is dry

A young woman with thick, frizzy hair looking distressed while holding a strand of her hair.

Earlier my hair was so dry that it would break when I combed it. Then I tried these things:

Hair mask – applied curd + honey + coconut oil pack which brought back the moisture.

Love for oil- Started massaging with coconut oil mixed with a little bit of olive oil twice a week.

Mild Shampoo – Use sulfate-free shampoo so that the hair does not become more dry.

2. If you have oily hair

A close-up image of a person using a comb on their hair, focusing on the hair texture and technique.

A friend of mine had really oily hair, and I learned this trick from her:

  • Keeping the scalp clean – 3 times a week with mild shampoo and lukewarm water.
  • Avoid excessive oiliness – just apply oil 30 minutes before and wash it off, not overnight.
  • Aloe Vera Gel – Applying it on the scalp provides freshness and oil control.

3. If you have wavy or curly hair

My cousin has curly hair, and I noticed that:

  • Leave-in conditioner softens and defines hair.
  • Comb your hair only when it is wet to reduce breakage.
  • Minimize heat – use straighteners/blow dryers sparingly.

4. My Golden Rules for Haircare

Reduce stress – because stress is also a major cause of hair fall.

Lightly massage the scalp daily.

Avoid excessive chemical treatments.

Include protein (egg, pulses, soy) and vitamin-rich foods in your diet.

Choosing the right shampoo

The first step to getting soft and smooth hair is to choose the right shampoo .

  • Sulfate-free shampoo – These do not remove natural oils from the hair, keeping the hair healthy and soft.
  • Moisturizing shampoo – Contains ingredients like aloe vera, argan oil, coconut oil, or shea butter.
  • Keratin Shampoo – Good for damaged hair, it repairs hair and makes it smooth.

My personal favorite brands :

  • WOW Skin Science Coconut Milk Shampoo (Sulfate-Free, Great for Dry Hair)
  • Mamaearth Argan Hair Shampoo (Reduces Frizz & Dryness)
  • L’Oréal Paris Dream Lengths Restoring Shampoo (For Damage Repair and Smoothness)
  • Tresemme Keratin Smooth Shampoo (For a straight and smooth look)

How to use shampoo

Many people use the wrong method of shampooing, which makes their hair dry.
The right way:

  1. First, wet your hair thoroughly with lukewarm water.
  2. Take a small amount of shampoo in the palm and create a light lather with water.
  3. Apply only on the scalp (roots), no need to rub it much on the length of the hair.
  4. Massage gently (not with nails, but with the knuckles of the fingers).
  5. Wash with cold or normal water (lukewarm water can dry out the hair).

Use of conditioner is necessary

Make sure to apply conditioner after shampoo as it makes the hair soft, smooth and detangled.

  • Apply conditioner only on the lengths and ends of the hair, not on the scalp.
  • Leave it for 2-3 minutes and wash with cold water.

💡 Tip: If the conditioner is thick, then mix it with some water before applying it, this will make it spread evenly.

Extra Care Steps

Oiling 1-2 times a week – Gentle massage with coconut + almond oil or argan oil.

Hair mask once a week – Curd + Honey + Aloe Vera pack makes the hair naturally smooth.

Reduce the heat – Minimise the use of straighteners, curlers and hair dryers.

Silk Pillow Cover – It maintains smoothness by reducing hair friction.

My personal experience

When I started using sulfate-free shampoo, the right conditioner, and a hair mask once a week, my hair texture changed drastically in just 1 month – no more frizz, no more dryness, and it started to detangle easily when brushed.
