It is believed that anyone who purchases gold, silver, or utensils on this day will be blessed with the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi throughout the year.

Method of worship

  • First of all clean the house and make rangoli on the door.
  • Light a lamp in the evening facing south.
  • Chant the mantra “Om Dhanvantariye Namaha” while worshipping Lord Dhanvantari.
  • Finally, offer turmeric, rice and flowers to please Goddess Lakshmi.

Small remedy: Buying a new broom on this day is considered auspicious, it removes negative energy.

Day 2: Naraka Chaturdashi (Chhoti Diwali)

Significance of Narak Chaturdashi

This day symbolizes the victory of good over evil. According to legend, Lord Krishna killed the demon Narakasura on this day. Therefore, this day is called ‘Narak Chaturdashi’ or ‘Chhoti Diwali.’

Worship and traditions

  • Take an oil bath before sunrise, this is called “Abhyanga Snan”.
  • Light up every corner of the house with lamps.
  • Worship Lord Krishna, Goddess Lakshmi and Yamraj.
  • Avoid tamasic food on this day and eat light, sattvik food with the family.

Small Tip: If possible, light 14 lamps outside your house, it keeps negative energies away.

Day 3: Lakshmi Puja – The main day of Diwali

Importance of Lakshmi Puja

The third day of Diwali is the most special. This day is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha. It is believed that Goddess Lakshmi descends to earth on this night and enters homes that are clean and filled with positive energy.

Method of worship

  • Light a lamp at the main door of the house in the evening.
  • Install the idols of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi at the place of worship.
  • Offer saffron, turmeric, flowers, sweets and coins.
  • Recite “Om Srim Mahalakshmyai Namah” 108 times.

On this day, Lord Krishna lifted Mount Govardhan, defeating Indra’s arrogance, to protect his devotees from heavy rain. This day teaches us to be grateful to nature, cows, and agriculture.

Method of worship

  • Make a symbol of Govardhan mountain from cow dung at home or in the temple.
  • Light lamps and decorate flowers around it.
  • Offer curd, milk, and Annakut (various types of dishes) to Lord Krishna.
  • Distribute Prasad after Aarti.

Day 5: Bhai Dooj – The day of brother-sister love

Importance of Bhai Dooj

Bhai Dooj is celebrated on the last day of Diwali. This day symbolizes the unwavering love and promise of protection between brothers and sisters. According to legend, Yamaraj visited his sister Yami’s home, and this festival began that day.

  • Sisters apply tilak to their brother, perform aarti and feed him sweets.
  • Brothers give gifts to their sisters and promise to protect them.
  • Special dishes are prepared at home on this day.
