Sometimes I open Instagram just to watch a few reels. I start with something funny, but before I realise it, I am looking at outfit videos. One girl is wearing a crop top with jeans, someone else has styled a simple shirt in a nice way, and another person is showing a traditional look. I end up saving a few reels and thinking, “Can I try this with something I already have?”

That is one thing I enjoy about fashion. I don’t always need a new outfit to try a different style. Sometimes, wearing an old shirt with different jeans is enough to make it feel new.

For college, I usually like comfortable clothes that don’t take too much time to style. Crop tops with jeans, casual shirts and short kurtis are some of the options I enjoy. On days when I need a more formal appearance, I prefer something neat and simple.

Festivals are different, though. Last year, I wore a Maharashtrian look for Garba during Navratri. It felt special because I don’t dress that way every day. Trying a traditional look for the occasion was a nice change from my usual college outfits.

Fashion doesn’t have to mean buying every new trend. I think it is also about finding your own style, using what you have and wearing clothes that make you feel comfortable.

1. Everyday Outfits I Like for College

Getting ready for college is not always as easy as it sounds. Some mornings, I know exactly what I want to wear. On other days, I look through my clothes for a while before choosing something.

When I don’t want to spend much time deciding, jeans are an easy starting point. I can wear them with a crop top, a casual shirt or a short kurti. The outfit changes, even though I am using the same pair of jeans.

For a slightly formal look, a simple shirt with trousers is a good option. I would keep the accessories light and wear footwear that is comfortable enough for a full day.

A few combinations I like are:

  • Crop top with blue jeans for a casual day.
  • A shirt with straight-leg denim for a simple, neat look.
  • Short kurti with jeans when I want to wear something traditional.
  • Formal shirt with trousers for a more polished outfit.
  • Plain top with wide-leg jeans for a relaxed style.

I don’t think every college outfit needs lots of accessories or complicated styling. If the clothes look good together and I can move around comfortably, that works for me. Small details, such as earrings or a different hairstyle, can make the outfit feel a little different.

2. Indian Wear for Festivals and Family Functions

Indian wear has a special place in my wardrobe because there are so many styles to choose from. A kurti can work for an ordinary day, while a suit, ethnic skirt or saree may feel more suitable for a wedding or family function.

I also like the fact that traditional clothes can be styled in different ways. A suit I have worn before might look different with another dupatta, a pair of earrings or a new hairstyle. I don’t always have to buy a completely new outfit for every gathering.

Navratri is one occasion when people get creative with their clothes. Colourful outfits, jewellery and different hairstyles become part of the celebration. Even while scrolling through Instagram, I enjoy seeing how people put their Garba looks together.

Last year, I wore a Maharashtrian look for Garba, and I really enjoyed the experience. It was a change from my regular college style, and dressing traditionally made the occasion feel different. I liked trying something that I wouldn’t normally wear on an everyday basis.

That experience made me realise that fashion can also be about enjoying an occasion. Sometimes, wearing a traditional outfit and being part of the celebration is more memorable than following a trend just because it is popular.

3. Western Outfits for College and Outings

Western wear gives me plenty of options without needing a very large wardrobe. Jeans, crop tops, shirts and dresses can all be mixed and matched, which makes getting dressed a little easier.

For an outing with friends, I might choose jeans with a crop top or a casual shirt. Wide-leg jeans can look nice with a fitted top, while an oversized shirt gives a relaxed feel. If I don’t want to think too much about matching separate pieces, a simple dress is another option.

One thing I like about jeans is that I can wear the same pair several times without making every outfit look the same. I can pair them with a shirt one day and a crop top another day. Changing the top, shoes or hairstyle can be enough.

Instagram is useful when I need ideas, but I try not to judge an outfit only by how it looks in a reel. A dress may look beautiful on screen, but the fabric or fitting might be different in real life. Before ordering, I would check the size chart, product reviews and return details.

Not every trend will suit everyone, and that is completely fine. I would rather wear something I genuinely like than buy an outfit just because I have seen it everywhere online.

4. Colours and Prints I Enjoy

When I think about buying clothes, I find it useful to consider what will match the things I already own. Black, white, beige and navy are practical colours because they can be paired with many other shades.

Pastel colours, such as light pink, lavender and baby blue, can give an outfit a softer appearance. For festivals and celebrations, brighter colours can feel more cheerful. The choice really depends on the occasion and my mood.

Prints are another way to change the look of simple clothing. Floral kurtis, striped shirts and checked patterns can work well for everyday wear. For Garba, colourful traditional outfits can create a more festive appearance.

I wouldn’t buy something just because a particular colour is trending. If I want to experiment, I can start with a top or a small accessory instead of spending money on a complete outfit. That way, trying a new style doesn’t have to become an expensive decision.

5. Accessories That Can Change an Outfit

Sometimes, the clothes are simple, but the accessories make the overall look feel more complete. A kurti with earrings and a dupatta can look suitable for a family gathering, while jeans and a crop top may work well with a handbag and small earrings.

For college, I prefer the idea of keeping accessories practical. I don’t need heavy jewellery for an ordinary day. A watch, small earrings or a simple bag can be enough.

Festivals are different. I enjoy the idea of matching traditional jewellery with an ethnic outfit, especially for occasions like Garba. When I wore my Maharashtrian look last year, the traditional styling was part of what made the experience feel special.

Footwear also changes the feel of an outfit. Sneakers are an easy choice with jeans, while flats or sandals can work for casual outings. Heels may be suitable for a party or reception, but comfort matters too, especially when I know I’ll be standing or walking for a long time.

I would rather choose accessories that work with several outfits. They are more useful than something I buy for one occasion and then leave untouched in a cupboard.

6. Hairstyles and Makeup for Different Occasions

I like trying different hairstyles because even a small change can make an outfit feel different. Some days, I prefer leaving my hair open. At other times, straight hair, soft curls or loose waves can be fun to try. Braids, ponytails and buns are also good options when I want something different.

For college, I would usually choose a hairstyle that doesn’t require too much time. When there is a wedding, reception or Garba night, I can spend a little longer getting ready and choose a hairstyle that goes with the outfit.

My makeup choices would also depend on where I am going. For a regular college day, I prefer a light look rather than using lots of products. Moisturiser, sunscreen and a little lip colour can be enough for a simple routine. If I want more coverage, I can add some concealer.

For a festive occasion, I might choose a more dressed-up look to match the clothes and jewellery. I don’t think there is one makeup routine that works for every situation. Some days, a simple look feels right; on other days, getting ready for an event is part of the fun.

7. Shopping for Fashion on a Budget

Shopping apps can easily distract me. I might open one to find a shirt and end up looking at handbags, jeans and tops as well. When everything has a sale tag, it becomes tempting to keep browsing even if I didn’t plan to buy anything else.

Before placing an order, I would rather check my cupboard first. Maybe there is a top I haven’t worn for a while, or a kurti that could look different with another pair of jeans. Trying a new combination costs nothing and can help me use my clothes more often.

When I do want to shop, these are a few things worth checking:

  • Decide your budget first. It is easier to control spending when you know your limit.
  • Compare the final price. Delivery charges and other costs can make an offer less attractive.
  • Read customer reviews. Comments about fabric, sizing and stitching can be useful.
  • Check the size chart. Don’t rely only on the size you usually wear.
  • Think about matching outfits. A new item is more useful if it works with clothes you already own.
  • Don’t rush because of a sale. An offer is not a good deal if you don’t need the product.

I also think it helps to wait a little before buying something that isn’t necessary. If I still like it later and can imagine wearing it on different occasions, I can consider whether it is worth the money.

8. Fashion Shopping Mistakes to Avoid

One mistake that is easy to make while shopping online is choosing a size without checking the measurements. Different brands can have different size charts, so it is worth checking before ordering.

I would also pay attention to the fabric and product details. A dress may look lovely in a photograph, but that doesn’t tell me everything about its material or fit. Customer photos and reviews can sometimes give a clearer idea of what to expect.

Another thing to consider is whether I already own something similar. If my cupboard has several tops in almost the same colour and style, another one might not give me many new outfit combinations.

I enjoy watching fashion reels and saving outfit ideas, but I don’t need to copy every look exactly. Sometimes, I can take one small idea from a video and use it with clothes I already have. Maybe I can style a shirt differently, try another hairstyle or pair a kurti with jeans.

Before buying something, I would ask myself one simple question: Will I actually wear this? If I can only imagine wearing it once, I would think carefully before spending money on it.
