We all know a little bit about skincare, but the truth is, I also didn’t take it seriously initially. I used to think that just washing my face and occasionally applying moisturizer was enough. But one day, when I looked at my old pictures, I realized that my skin looked dull, tired, and aged. That’s when I understood that I was making some common skincare mistakes that made my skin look up to 10 years older.

In this blog, I am sharing the 10 big mistakes that I personally made—and after correcting them, my skin has become quite healthy, fresh, and glowing. If you also avoid these mistakes, trust me, your skin will visibly look younger.

1. Overwashing Your Face

The first mistake I used to make: washing my face 3–4 times a day. I thought this would control oiliness and make my skin look fresh.

However, it had the reverse effect—my skin became excessively dry, fine lines became visible, and I felt tightness.

My Experience:

When I limited face washing to just 2 times (morning & night), my skin started regaining its natural glow.

2. Skipping Sunscreen

This was my biggest lifetime mistake. I thought sunscreen should only be applied on sunny days.

But when I researched and consulted a dermatologist, I learned that UV rays are present every day—whether it’s cloudy, winter, or anything else.

The Result?

Pigmentation, tanning, forehead lines, and an uneven tone.

What I Do Now?

I apply SPF 30+ daily, even indoors.

3. Not Removing Makeup

Many times, I would be tired and fall asleep without removing my makeup. This mistake damages the skin the most—clogged pores, breakouts, premature aging… everything.

My Moment:Once, I got a bumpy texture on the side of my nose. Since then, I never sleep with makeup on.

It’s now a habit: “No matter what, makeup must go!”

4. Following Every New Trend

In skincare, a new trend emerges every week—glass skin, slugging, peeling, acids… In the initial days, I also tried every trend.

The Result? Skin irritation, redness, and once, I even experienced a mild burning sensation.

My Learning: Not all trends are for all skin types. Now I only follow what my skin can tolerate.

5. Ignoring Internal Hydration

Drinking less water was also a major mistake. I thought creams would provide all the hydration. But the reality: dehydrated skin -to- visible wrinkles -to- dull look.
When I increased my water and fluid intake, my skin instantly started looking plump.

6. Mixing & Matching Every Product

At one point, I applied Vitamin C + Retinol + Niacinamide all together. Because I thought the more products, the more glowing the skin. But this combo became a disaster for my skin barrier.

My Lesson:Less is more.

Now I follow a simple routine—cleanser, serum, moisturizer, sunscreen.

7. Using Expired Products

Sometimes, I wouldn’t remember to check the expiry date. Once, I used an old moisturizer, and the next morning I had tiny red bumps on my cheeks. Since then, I always check the expiry date of my products and label the jars.

8. Over-Exfoliation

I used to think that exfoliating 3–4 times a week was good because it made the skin smooth. But over-exfoliation made my skin thin, sensitive, and inflamed. Now I only exfoliate 1–2 times weekly, and my skin feels much calmer.

9. Using Cheap Makeup Tools

Cheap sponges, old brushes, or unclean tools… At one time, I thought that the quality of a brush didn’t matter. But this is a major reason for breakouts. When I started keeping my makeup brushes clean and used quality tools, my skin’s texture improved.

10. Not Understanding My Skin Type

I thought my skin was oily, but it was actually combination skin. Using the wrong products made my T-zone oily and my cheeks dry. When I understood my exact skin type, I chose the products accurately— and the result was genuinely noticeable.

My Final Personal Experience Summary

After avoiding all these mistakes, I saw these major changes in my skin:

  • Skin looks much fresher.
  • Fine lines are visibly reduced.
  • Pores look refined.
  • Makeup applies much smoother.
  • Skin tone has become naturally brighter.

Honestly, skincare is not complicated—it’s just a game of maintaining a simple routine + correct habits.

This blog is based on my personal experience and general skincare knowledge. Every skin type is different, so results may vary. For severe skin issues, consult a dermatologist.
