There is a gentle, comforting rhythm that settles over my home every year during Choti Diwali. The fast-paced excitement of Dhanteras shopping has cleared away, leaving behind the warm aroma of fresh marigold garlands, roasting gram flour for laddoos, and heated sesame oil. Also known as Narak Chaturdashi, Roop Chaudas, or Kali Chaudas, this day has always held a deeply cozy place in my heart. While everyone looks forward to the grand spectacle of main Diwali, Choti Diwali is our quiet pause—a chance to wash away mental fatigue, clear physical clutter, and fill every corner of the house with a soft, comforting glow.

This year’s timing is quite unique. The Chaturdashi Tithi begins in the morning of Saturday, November 7, 2026, and carries through until the morning of Sunday, November 8. Because of this overlap, our night-time lamp rituals (Yama Deepam) fall on Saturday evening, while our early morning pre-dawn oil bath (Abhyang Snan) takes place on Sunday morning, right before we kick off main Diwali celebrations!

Goodreturns

If you want to keep things simple, peaceful, and soulful without getting overwhelmed by long checklists, here is how I personally celebrate Choti Diwali at home.

1. The Pre-Dawn Reset: Ubtan and Abhyang Snan on Choti Diwali

If you ask me what single ritual defines Choti Diwali, it is waking up while the sky is still dark for the traditional Abhyang Snan. In our household, this day is called Roop Chaudas (the day of natural beauty and renewal). The idea is simple: we cleanse away physical impurities and fatigue before sunrise so we can welcome divine blessings with a fresh body and mind.

My Go-To Ubtan Recipe

Instead of buying fancy store cosmetics, my mother taught me to mix a natural herbal paste that leaves your skin naturally glowing:

 • 2 tablespoons of Gram Flour (Besan)
 • 1/2 teaspoon of Wild Turmeric (Kasturi Manjal)
 • 1 tablespoon of Sandalwood Powder (Chandan)
 • A splash of Raw Milk or Rose Water
 • A few drops of pure Sesame Oil

I massage warm sesame oil over my arms and legs, smooth on this fragrant paste, and wash it off with lukewarm water. The pre-dawn bath window for Sunday, November 8, 2026, is roughly between 5:41 AM and 6:38 AM IST. Trust me, stepping out of the shower at dawn with smooth skin and a quiet house feels incredibly refreshing.

2. Entrance Magic: Handcrafted Rangoli and Marigolds on Choti Diwali

You don’t need expensive store-bought props to make your home feel festive. The doorway is the first thing your family sees when they wake up, so I focus most of my decor efforts right at the entrance.

Quick Entrance Touches

 • Fresh Flower Garlands: I weave yellow and orange marigolds with dark green mango leaves to hang across the door frame. Marigolds bring positive energy, and green leaves keep the doorway looking fresh.
 • Hand-Drawn Rangoli: I step away from plastic stick-on rangolis. Taking 15 minutes to draw a traditional design with white rice flour and turmeric powder feels like a peaceful, grounding meditation.
 • Goddess Footprints: Using rice paste, I draw tiny footprints pointing into the house across the threshold to symbolically invite prosperity indoors.

3. The Choti Diwali Evening Light Rituals: Yama Deepam & 14 Diyas

As twilight sets in, our living room shifts from bright daytime light to warm, flickering candle glow. On Choti Diwali, we observe two distinct lighting customs that give the evening its magical atmosphere.

┌────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
EVENING LAMP PLACEMENTS
├────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
• Yama Deepak ➔ Placed outside, facing South
• Threshold Diyas ➔ Flanking both sides of front door
• Water & Kitchen ➔ Placed near sink & water storage
• Dark Corners ➔ Clearing shadow zones in storage

The Protective Yama Deepak

While main Diwali lamps welcome Goddess Lakshmi, one special lamp on Choti Diwali evening is lit for Lord Yama (the deity of time and health).

We take a large, four-wick clay diya (Chaumukhi Diya), fill it with mustard oil, light all four wicks, and place it outside our main gate facing South. It is a traditional prayer asking for protection against illness and bad fortune for every family member. Once placed outside, tradition says you should walk back inside without turning around to look back at it.

The Tradition of 14 Clay Diyas

Instead of lighting hundreds of lamps all over the roof tonight, traditional custom calls for 14 oil diyas. I arrange them intentionally around essential household spots:

 1. Two on either side of the main door frame
 2. One inside the puja room altar
 3. One beside the kitchen sink and main water storage
 4. One under our courtyard Tulsi plant
 5. The remaining scattered in dark storage corners, hallway bends, and balconies

4. Cozy Festive Bites: Simple Home Treats

With the main Diwali feast waiting for us tomorrow, I keep Choti Diwali food simple, soulful, and comforting. The goal is to spend less time standing over a hot stove and more time relaxing with family.

 • Warm Besan Laddoos: Roasting gram flour slowly in pure ghee with cardamom powder fills the entire house with an unmistakable holiday scent. Rolling them while the mix is still warm is a family favorite.
 • Halwai-Style Aloo Poori: For dinner, puffed golden pooris paired with a fragrant cumin-and-asafoetida potato curry (Hing Jeera Aloo) delivers ultimate comfort after evening prayers.
 • Saffron Rice Kheer: A small pot of slow-cooked rice pudding sweetened with raw sugar and crushed pistachios makes a simple, sweet offering for the home altar.

Bringing Real Peace to Your Evening

It is very easy to get swept up in the pressure of social media decorations, heavy shopping lists, and endless party prep. But Choti Diwali is fundamentally about shedding unnecessary weight—whether that is dust in a corner, physical exhaustion, or old mental stress.

Turn off your television, put your smartphone on silent for two hours, and put on soft sitar or flute music in the background. Sit on the floor with a warm cup of cardamom tea, watch the soft flames of your clay diyas, and enjoy the quiet togetherness of your home.

Wishing you and your family a peaceful, glowing, and joyful Choti Diwali 2026!
