Granola

The recall was triggered when the company was notified that organic moringa powder, an ingredient used to make the granola, tested positive for Salmonella.

If you purchased this product, do not eat it. You should throw it away in a secure trash can with a tight fitting lid after first double bagging or wrapping it so other people can’t see it. Contact the company you bought the granola from for a full refund.

If you did eat this granola, monitor your health for the symptoms of Salmonella food poisoning for the next week. If you do get sick, see your doctor. Watch for symptoms in your child as well and see their pediatrician if they get sick.

Why this recall is particularly concerning

Salmonella is dangerous for anyone, but the population that purchased Lacnola Lactation Granola deserves specific attention here. Breastfeeding mothers are among the groups for whom salmonella infection can be more consequential — not only because the physical demands of postpartum recovery and nursing can complicate illness, but because of the potential for salmonella to affect the breastfed infant.

The CDC notes that salmonella can be present in breast milk in rare cases, though transmission to infants through breastfeeding is uncommon. The more immediate concern is a new mother becoming significantly ill from salmonella during a period when she’s already navigating sleep deprivation, physical recovery, and infant care.

Beyond new mothers specifically, the mail-order distribution model creates a traceability problem that retail distribution doesn’t. If you bought a recalled product at Kroger, you might see a sign at the store or get a loyalty card notification. If a recalled product was mailed to you, the notification chain is significantly shorter. And the responsibility to find out falls more heavily on the consumer.

What salmonella symptoms look like

Symptoms of salmonella infection typically appear six hours to six days after exposure and include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Most healthy adults recover within four to seven days without treatment. For new mothers who are already exhausted and potentially nutritionally depleted from nursing, a salmonella infection that would be manageable under other circumstances can be significantly more disruptive.

Anyone who develops these symptoms after consuming Lacnola Lactation Granola should contact their healthcare provider and mention the recall specifically.
